This past weekend a computer convinced a third of people who it talked to that it was a 13-year-old boy from Ukraine. This means that for the first time ever a computer has passed the Turning Test and we as humans are one step closer in creating artificial intelligence.
This either means that we are one step closer to the welcoming of our robotic overlords or that artificial intelligence is going to help with our daily lives. Below is a list of jobs that we hope robots can perform proficiently and effectively.
Driver
- Yes, Google has already made self driving cars but how long until you can hail for one? Taxi’s may not have any humans in them when the self-driving cars become a craze. Imagine if Google were to open a Taxi Cab company and install a “I’m Feeling Lucky” button on every car? Things would sure be interesting for everyone then.
EMT Dispatch
- At some point in everyone’s life we need to dial 911 because of an emergency. Imagine if the program in passing the Turning Test were to dispatch emergency vehicles to your location as you were talking. The human factor will be missing if a robot were to take over the job but I would assume a person would be there just in case worse comes to worse.
Fast Food
- Teenagers beware, robots may come for your summer job! As someone who has worked in fast food, I cannot say I’m more than thrilled about this assumption but I can see the benefits of it as well. Imagine a fast food restaurant that has a robotic kitchen staff but a human staff that helps customers and takes orders. There is still a human factor but with the efficiency of a robotic counterpart and as long as a robot does not break it could see it’s sales jump significantly.
Babysitter
- Now this one seems a little far-fetched I agree. I don’t think a parent is going to let a robot watch their child right away when little Susie from down the street will do it next to nothing but when little Susie isn’t there who then? This may be a little crazy but I wouldn’t mind my child being watched by a robot. The robot won’t invite any friends over or raid the fridge for food, and depending on what the robot can actually do it may serve as a full-time sitter for any occasion.
Pharmacist
- Something that is already being implemented in some areas of the United States, robot pharmacists are slowly but surely replacing people behind the counter. How it works is you drop off your prescription to the robot where it scans a bar code with the appropriate dosage. These robots might find their way into hospitals as well with nurses implementing the bar code reader to assign medication correctly.
Tech Support
- This hopefully won’t be like the per-recorded messages that are always on the other side of the phone call. Granted, this may take a while for actual phone calls to have robots on it but online tech support will see a surge in robots if it hasn’t already. Robots may take over tech support but what will happen if that robot has to call tech support?
Elderly Care
- They may be crotchety about it but robots will be there for the elderly twenty-four hours a day. I for one welcome a robot that will clean up after everything I do when I turn eighty. Nothing seems better than a maid that doesn’t talk, cleans everything, and can get a hold of emergency services if worse comes to worse. Plus I may teach it to high-five, because why not?
